POSITION TITLE: Technical Publications and Learning & Development Manager
LOCATION: Collingwood, ON or Sudbury, ON (On-site Position)
MacLean Engineering is looking for skilled and experienced Technical Publications and Learning & Development Manager to join our growing team. The position allows for flexibility in location, with the option to work on-site in either Collingwood or Sudbury, Ontario. About the Position: The Technical Publications and Learning & Development Manager is responsible for managing the Technical Publications and Learning and Development team in all aspects of creating, revising, and publication of our technical manuals (parts, operators, maintenance) and our training material (published and electronic for internal and external). These departments represent the formal way in which the documentation of the products are delivered to the end customer and as such clarity, accuracy, and timeliness are of paramount importance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Technical Publications
- Scheduling and directing the publication activities based on the priorities of capital orders, aftermarket orders, and other requests such that all end customers receive the requested materials on time.
- Developing improved methods for the creation of the published material including the use of off-site resources (e.g. for translations), standardized manuals that can be pre-printed, etc. to improve the total output capacity of the team.
- Assessing the staffing requirements of the team, the tools needed by the team, and the overall performance of the team using agreed upon metrics.
- Establishing clear and effective lines of communication between other department managers who are direct inputs or recipients of the published material.
- Supporting and facilitating all tasks and responsibilities found within the Publications Technician job descriptions.
- Develop & Support team members in career aspirations within the Tech Pubs team and company
- Lead & motivate the team to increase productivity
- Resolve any conflicts that may arise in accordance and consultation with HR
- Promote team collaboration where required to complete tasks within a timely fashion.
Learning and Development
- Scoping, designing, developing and delivery of learning projects while meeting course development milestones, ensuring delivery of quality learning solutions that meet objectives/final deliverable requirements, on budget and on time
- Designing and developing interactive and responsive eLearning modules/courseware using leading instructional design principles and industry standard tools
- Designing, developing and delivery of innovative digital learning solutions to address client performance requirements leveraging relevant and appropriate modalities
- Leading the implementation of learning curricula, programs, performance support etc. through the learning management system (LMS) and/or learning experience platform (LXP) on budget and on time
- Conduct formal needs assessment (in consultation with the functional learning lead/stakeholders) by identifying broad business requirements, scoping out key design/development solutions and establishing measurement targets deliverables to understand learning objectives of content and subject complexities to design and deliver responsive learning solutions
- Engage with digital and business skills learning lead(s) and business leaders/stakeholders to understand learning objectives of content and subject complexities as they apply to measurement and evaluation; consults and collaborates with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to analyze and define learning objectives and requirement
About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma in English or technical field is preferred
- Technical Writing Certificate from a recognized institution is an asset
- A Post-Secondary education related to Learning and Instructional Design or equivalent experience
- Previous experience as a technical writer
- Previous experience managing technical publication activities either as a sole proprietor or as part of an organization
- Excellent organization skills with regards to electronic files/folders
- Able to proof read in a detailed manner and provide constructive feedback to progressively improve the native quality of the published material
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite software
- Strong working knowledge of technical writing and manual publishing tools like Mad Cap Flare and Documoto
- Business experience in Learning and Development in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
- Proven experience in learning and performance consulting and partnering with internal clients to identify, assess, design, develop, deploy and evaluate learning solutions
- In-depth knowledge and use of various authoring tools and industry standards
- A strong team orientation with the ability to work collaboratively to achieve goals
- Strong influencing, presentation, negotiation and communication skills coupled with the ability to work independently
