Systems Engineering – Telematics Automation and Controls (TAC)

  • Anywhere

The newly formed Systems Engineering team at MacLean Engineering is building the backbone of our product development process—uniting electrical, mechanical, and software design into a cohesive, high-performance system. As part of the Telematics, Automation & Controls (TAC) division, we’re looking for a motivated and curious Systems Associate to join our growing team.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that’s shaping the future of underground mining technology. You’ll work alongside multidisciplinary engineers across our facilities in Sudbury—home to our underground test mine—and Collingwood, our prototyping and manufacturing hub. Together, we’re developing systematic, standards-aligned approaches to requirements definition, design integration, and rigorous validation.

Whether you're passionate about structured testing, requirements management, or cross-domain system thinking, this role offers hands-on experience across the full V-model of engineering design. Depending on your background and career goals, you’ll be supported in growing your skills across new product development and current product improvement.

Given the large scope of work this team covers, we are looking for highly motivated candidates who can contribute their skills and expertise immediately in some of the areas below, but who also have a passion for new challenges and an openness to learn new skills. Every day we strive for more efficient, safer, and more sustainable mining systems—one integrated design at a time.

General Responsibilities and Duties

Supporting all other engineering teams responsible for 30+ MacLean vehicle types and all subsystems

Establishing, evolving, and executing internal processes for the major steps of the Engineering V-model of design:

  • Requirements generation, including
    • Systematic reviews of international and regional Standards
    • Review of customer specifications, use cases, etc.
  • Safety Concept Development & Risk Assessments:
    • Lead the development of risk assessments and safety concepts and safety critical designs
    • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to define safety-critical functions and risk reduction measures.
    • IEC 61508 16-step “Safety Lifecycle” framework,
    • ISO 12100 Risk Assessment methodology,
    • ISO 13849 Design of Safety Functions.
  • Functional Safety Documentation and Compliance Management:
    • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architecture, configurations, and processes.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant national and international regulations and industry best practices.
    • Own the development and maintenance of safety-related work products, including Safety Requirements Specifications (SRS) and Safety Validation Plans, using structured tools like Jama Connect.
    • Ensure audit readiness and compliance by providing evidence of conformity through rigorous documentation and traceability.
  • Testing, Verification & Validation: ensuring all requirements are met
    • Establish test cases linked to requirements within the tool to ensure coverage and compliance.
    • Execute tests, document and feedback results to design teams
    • Maintain the test lab, align with international testing standards and approaches, and always maintain maximum safety focus
    • Regularly review and update verification statuses, ensuring readiness for audits or reviews.
    • Oversee the creation of verification artifacts (e.g., fault tree analyses, FMEAs) and validation tests, ensuring they align with safety integrity requirements (e.g., PLr, SIL levels).
    • Use computational tools (Sistema) to validate reliability metrics, including MTTFd and DCavg, for system components.
    • establishing a world-class testing facility and approach for all testing, including creation of automated test equipment (HIL/SIL/Simboards)

Product Design Ownership: MacLean Safety System (MSS)

  • The MSS is an area guarding system that consists of a novel detection method, utilizing a radar sensor deployed in the middle of a mine drift to monitor a large “Detection Zone” between a remote controlled vehicle and it’s operator. Any encroachments into the detection zone (from either the operator side, or the vehicle side) will immediately apply the vehicle’s brakes, and bring it to a safe stop.
  • Our team is the design owner (mechanical, electrical & software) for the radar barrier device, wifi access points, and integrations with both vehicle and Radio Remote Control systems.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong technical and communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:

  • Professional or Academic experience covering the job responsibilities and duties described above.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng) license or similar certification is an asset.
