The Position:
The ideal candidate has had experience in the underground mining industry in technology projects from conception to implementation. The purpose of this role is to define & refine the telematics, automation and controls products that we offer or will be offering to our customers in the future and to provide clear user requirements that feed into design criteria, both from immediate customers and where future requirements will develop. The scope includes vehicle control, remote systems, progressive levels of automation, telematics and prototype vehicles. The candidate will be working with others within product management to define this, and with key customers to determine where the value is, both currently and into the future. This role will also be managing relationships with key technology partners.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Telematics:
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to develop machine telemetry & telematics offerings tailored to the requirements of the customer, most notably mine planning operations and maintenance departments.
- Engage with mine sites to understand their telemetry needs and identify opportunities for innovative digital solutions.
- Monitor and analyze product performance data, customer feedback, and market trends to drive continuous improvement, innovation, and effective monetization of the product.
- Connect aftermarket sales with on-machine telemetry
- Review and revise the pricing model on telemetry products in a way that is more aligned with industry trends, customer expectations and MacLean requirements.
Automation and remote controls:
- Rationalize remote options, and ensure consistent application across product lines
- Gather user case scenarios including safety cases from customers & define that in a limited number of products.
- Give directions on tele-operated equipment and associated hardware selection
- Manage relationships with other OEMs for interoperable systems
- Roadmap autonomous features and their pathway to commercialization
Controls:
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to develop and roll out new CANbus control systems appropriate to the application
- Ensure that savings that are envisioned with the new CANbus control systems are identified and realized
Common duties and responsibilities:
- Manage technology partnerships with key partners of MacLean. Those partnerships include other OEMs, technology providers and academia.
- Triage incoming requests and manage the backlog list of features and their completion urgency in conjunction with engineering
- Develop comprehensive product definitions, descriptions, requirements and roadmaps geared towards enhancing mine sites’ productivity, safety, and cost effectiveness through our technology products.
- Set direction and collaborate on supporting hardware developments and/or make/buy decisions
- Provide product demonstrations to potential customers.
- Stay current on industry developments, competitive offerings and issues affecting sales and customers. Attend industry conferences and visit key customer sites as required.
- Develop content for and collaborate in sales proposals & develop sales training material for sales personnel.
- Collaborate with others to develop training materials for field service and capital build support on these new systems
- Participate actively in complex, multi-year mining equipment sales.
- Travel from time to time, both domestic and internationally, is a requirement of this position.
- Take responsibility for personal development and enhancement of skills
- Ability to travel 25-50%
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:
- Post secondary education, preferably in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Additional education in business is considered an asset
- Minimum 10 years of experience in technology projects in underground or open pit mine operations, from conception & business case development to implementation & evaluation.
- Prior exposure to business management tools such as D365, PowerBI, DevOps/Jira and ProjectOps is considered an asset
- Prior exposure to software used in the mining industry is required. That software could include mine planning & scheduling systems, ERPs, data historians and remote & automation software.
- Required prior exposure to underground mining equipment / environment
- High level of computer literacy and proficiency with MS Office
- High level of professionalism, honesty, and integrity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, need to be able to positively represent MacLean when talking to customers, when presenting at conferences and when participating in panel discussions.
- Excellent listening skills
- Bilingualism or multilingualism is an asset (French and/or Spanish are desirable)
- The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and passport
