POSITION TITLE:                             Health and Safety Specialist

LOCATION:                                       North Bay, ON

Salary:                                               70,000 – 85,000 CAD

About the Position: Working closely with the site leadership, the Health and Safety Specialist has overall responsibility for managing health and safety improvement activities at the site.   This role leads the development, implementation, continuous improvement and promotion of strategies, procedures and systems to achieve sustainable health and safety excellence by reducing injuries and illnesses as measured in the core KPI’s.  This role also supports other regional satellite sites in coordination with the broader health and safety team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deploy the MacLean corporate H&S strategy, policy, systems and standards in the site to achieve excellent sustainable results
  • Influence senior leadership and drive health and safety leadership through line management
  • Lead the use of MacLean Academy, Learning Management System (LMS); plan and refine HS content, maintain status reports, troubleshoot issues, ensure optimization and overall training compliance
  • Develop content for online training, using Articulate software
  • Coordinate and assess effectiveness of orientation and training activities
  • Collaborate with site leadership to create monthly Safety Talks and support supervisors in delivering this content through participation and regular attendance
  • Audit and lead action plans by evaluating program elements (Emergency Response, Machine-guarding, WHMIS, First Aid etc.) through observation, interviews, surveys, and documentation review.
  • Ensure systems, processes and procedures are in place for early identification of hazards and appropriate communication of changes
  • Develop, drive and support Job Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments, advising and implementing appropriate process/procedure development
  • Develop and create action plans including coordinating Focus Groups with managers, supervisors and employees to control high-risk hazards
  • Assist leadership with gaps from HS metrics (leading and lagging indicators)
  • Review incident investigations and associated trends; Assist supervisors w/root causes, corrective actions, and follow up
  • Draft and submit workers’ compensation reports, assist with return-to-work process (modified duties documentation, meet with employees, follow-up on cases)
  • Provide support to Joint Health, Safety Committee and assist with administrative tasks
  • Create health and safety content and update communication boards or digital tools
  • Stay current with legislation changes and ensure organization complies with, and implements, standards, technical documents, policies and procedures
  • Make recommendations on personal protective equipment and oversee approved safety supplies
  • Organize and act on air/noise assessments and medical surveillance as required
  • Perform ergonomic assessments and recommend suitable tools/ equipment
  • Encourage site-consistency in equipment use and processes
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure that all policies and procedures take health and safety into account.
  • Travel between sites as require
  • Attend training, conferences and symposiums as required
  • Mentor team members and coop students as required

Qualifications:  

Education

  • Health, Safety related certificate, diploma, degree, or equivalent

Experience

  • Five or more years working in a similar role preferred
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment is an asset

Skills

  • Fluency in both English and French is preferred
  • Detailed-oriented and highly organized
  • Team-oriented, positive attitude, high aptitude, humble and willingness to learn
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated; able to schedule priorities as assigned and working with minimal direct supervision
  • Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Creative and innovative with focus on problem solving
