POSITION TITLE: Automated Welding Technician
LOCATION: Collingwood
SHIFT: Day shift – Monday to Thursday, 5:30a.m.-3:30p.m. (4×10-hr shifts)

About the Position: The Automated Welding Technician will focus on evaluating, improving, and adapting welded components to an automated welding process to increase productivity and reduce costs as well as develop strategies for improving quality and reducing defects. The following proficiencies are required:

  • Self Starter capable of providing leadership, mentoring and guidance to production Team members in welding and fabrication department.
  • Read and interpret engineered drawings, blueprints, or welding process specifications with minimal supervision.
  • Operate automated welding equipment to fuse metal segments using the gas metal arc welding(GMAW) or Metal Cored (MCAW) process.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for welded components and the suitability of the components for automated welding.
  • Operate material handling devices such as; overhead crane, gantry crane, and/or forklift in compliance with applicable safety standards and best practices. Material handling includes safe rigging and transportation of various loads.
  • Identify and implement improvements to robotic welding processes, including cycle time reduction, cost optimization, and quality enhancement.
  • Troubleshoot robotic welding equipment and cells, ensuring reliable operation and addressing any issues.
  • Demonstrate computer skills with MS office suite, effective email and Teams communication, Solidworks and robotic systems troubleshooting.
  • Help develop and implement fixturing and tooling for robotic welding applications.
  • Work with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to evaluate and improve the design of components to aid in adapting for automation.
  • Identify improvement opportunities for cost reduction, quality/safety improvement, efficiency improvement, or other improvement categories as applicable to welding and fabrication processes.
  • Competent at efficiently and timely fitting and welding all parts designated for L1 by Supervisor.
  • Operate hand and bench grinder to shape and prepare metal parts for welding.
  • Operate metal shaping or cutting machines such as bandsaw, and other metal straightening and bending machines.
  • Operate flame/plasma cutting equipment for repairs.
  • Assist with equipment/product repairs as needed.
  • Document Engineering Change Requests according to applicable procedures under direction of Supervisor.
  • Adopt and practice good housekeeping, 5S, and Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to quickly grasp welding and fitting concepts and apply to multiple projects. Potential for improvement in lesser competence will be recognized by Supervisor.
  • Abide by all applicable regulatory and company-specific safety standards.
  • Abide by ISO 9001 Quality Management System and associated procedures.
  • Contribute to continual improvement of safety, quality, product, production, and work environment.
  • Willing to cross-train in other departments as needed on a temporary basis

About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with the following qualifications:

  • College Education or Trade Certification in a recognized discipline would be an asset
  • Completion of a C of Q in Welding or some college/industry courses in Welding is preferred
  • 8+ years’ experience as a CWB Certified Welder
  • 1-3 years’ experience in automated welding systems
  • 10+ years’ experience working in a heavy manufacturing or industrial setting
  • Experience in ISO 9001, CSA W59, CWB W47.1/AWS D1.1 background
