Our history runs deep, and our future is looking up!
Our Story
Our first product in the Surface Mining Equipment Portfolio is the GR8 EV Grader – which is an 18ft fully battery electric pit-class grader. Graders are a key asset in the mining process. Having smooth roads ensures reliable truck haulage, consistent travel speeds, happy equipment operators or automaton systems, lower tire wear and machine damage, and ultimately more tons per hour at a lower cost.
The GR8 EV Grader project and MacLean’s Surface Mining Vehicle Division truly started as a result of MacLean’s core corporate ethos – which is that ‘we are problem solvers’. This ethos has been engrained into the fabric of MacLean and empowers our team to go out into the field; listen to our customers problems, trials, and tribulations; and apply our knowledge, skills, and know-how to design and develop fit-for-purpose equipment solutions.
Operator Cab:
- 30% larger interior space than other grader cabs
- Two person cab with trainer/technician seat
- Side entry cab to eliminate the need for front ‘cat walks’
- Enhanced visibility of the working area
- Extreme-duty air conditioning system and pressurized cab
- Cooled air ride seat with joystick machine controls

Working alongside the MacLean team throughout the development of the Battery Electric GR8 Grader project has been an example of a perfect project partnership. Their professionalism and level of detail from researching operational and maintenance requirements on site and this following into the design choices and ability to effectively implement feedback is a testament to the hard work from all parts of their team. MacLean have not accepted the current industry design of graders as best practice and have actively engaged with on site personal to target problem areas in current grader designs and improve these in the GR8.
From a project management point of view, the team have been easy to work with and have set up systems to track and ensure deliverables are on time and to a high level of quality. Even with the time zones challenges between Canada and Australia there is never a delay in responses and progress of the project. MacLean have been receptive to aggressive timeline requests and have demonstrated an ability to pivot and review all aspects of the project when requested.
We look forward to a continued partnership with MacLean and watching the GR8 go from a concept into the design and validation phase to see the results of the hard work put in by the team.
