POSITION TITLE: Product Engineering Manager – Remote Control Systems
LOCATION: Sudbury, ON
MacLean Engineering is looking for an experienced Product Engineering Manager – Remote Control Systems to join our Advanced Vehicle Technology team in Sudbury Ontario. About the Position: As the Product Engineering Manager, you will be directly responsible for the overall technical execution of your assigned product line(s) through the leadership and management of the product teams while keeping strong communication with other departments. This position heads the development of the remote-control system which includes line of sight remote, tele-remote and tele-operation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Communicate the product vision for the remote-control systems and maintain the roadmap based on priority
- Effectively manage and direct the engineering design team, evaluate work assignments, and ensure projects are completed in a timely fashion
- Coach and mentor the engineering design team to gain a strong appreciation for all aspects related to the applications, specifications and best design practices needed to achieve corporate goals.
- In this role you are expected to handle a higher degree of ambiguity in your day-to-day work and from that shape clearer direction for the remainder of the team to reach a positive outcome
- Lead a team of designers in electrical, mechanical, electronics, software, technical writer, field support technician and system administrator. Develop the team skills matrix and maintains the job descriptions for all resources. Forecast, review, and assess the team performance, organization, and structure. Perform interviews and support other recruitments events, review compensations. Ensure that the time and attendance management of the team and review timecards for payroll.
- Monitor and report new design project status (% complete, schedule creep, risk level and mitigation plan and communicate this both within the product team, internal customers, and external customers to confirm if all technical and schedule requirements are on track and direct any recovery plans as needed where deviations have occurred.

- Organize and execute continuous improvements to the product line in a manner that enhances the total quality of the end-product and is effectively adopted and communicated within the organization through to the end customers.
- Lead the development or sourcing of new technology, components, tools, or processes to improve the quality or effectiveness of the end-product and the product team.
- When required, support quoting activities by offering specific technical assessments on feasibility, cost estimates, design lead-time where it is outside the normal product offering.
- Develop plans and recommend/select technical avenues of how best to achieve the prioritized objectives on behalf of the Product Managers and follow through on those plans with the teams
- Work together with multiple teams to integrate interfacing systems, hardware, and software to accelerate the deployment of autonomous systems
- Evaluate and negotiate product requirements, and ensure work is aligned with high-level expectations.
- Forecast, review, and assess the new capital quotes/orders information for technical compliance, new options or combinations, long lead components and other factors that will influence the scheduling of work to ensure objectives above are met. This may include the need for travel to meet with customers where required to gain the necessary clarity.
- Ensure that the team prepare the build cards or other forms of engineering specifications to submit to their product team and the subsequent creation and release of the Bill of Materials (BOM) such that new capital orders are entered into the manufacturing process on schedule and free of errors/omissions.
- Monitor and manage design scopes and milestone dates related to new designs that are based on a clear understanding of the application requirements, the success criteria, and the potential risks and obtain the acceptance with internal and external customers.
- Maintained 3 months groomed backlog with work estimated efforts in Microsoft DevOps.
- Ensure a commonality in the usage of the Microsoft DevOps teams environments throughout the AVT group.
- Ensure that new developments are build with functional safety principles and standards and that requirements are traceable.
- Ensure a uniform and consistent architecture across the platform to unify and standardize all development and tools.
- Contribute to document and unify the data structure across the platform to support Interoperability.
- Promote and educate the team in work safety.
- Support and follow the MacLean Quality Policy and ISO 9001 objectives.
About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with any one of the following qualifications:
- Engineering Degree or Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- An advanced degree or other field specialization is an asset along with practical work experience.
- Eligibility for licensing through OACETT or PEO is encouraged.
- Five (5) years’ experience with underground mine equipment is required.
- High level of computer literacy and proficiency.
- High level of professionalism, honesty and integrity .
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and capacity to explain the architecture vision.
- Excellent listening skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Self-driven, highly motivated, and well organized.
PREFERRED QUALIFITATIONS:
- Experience with installation, maintenance, and improvement of vehicle technology (automation, vehicle control, data capture and/or batteries).
- Knowledge of Store & Forward principles experience in Linux (Embedded & Server) experience in vehicle Telemetry experience in Data science and the mining industry.
- Experience working in an Agile environment applying the Agile values and principles.
- Understanding of International Certifications and functional safety.
- Knowledge of internal combustion propulsion.
- Knowledge of Battery Electric Vehicles.
- Knowledge of remote controls, RF Spread Spectrum, Wi-Fi, CAN, Networking.
- Knowledge of Linux OS, iFM controllers, Simulink, ROS, MQTT.
- Knowledge of ISO 61508, 120100, 13849, 15817 and AS4240.
