POSITION TITLE: Engineering Manager – Vehicle Automation

LOCATION: Querétaro Mexico, Collingwood, or Sudbury Branch

The Position: As the leader for the Automation group, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our vehicle technology. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, your expertise will drive the product roadmap and tech stack to enable both tramming and application specific automation across our full fleet of products. This role offers an exciting opportunity to apply your technical skills, creativity, and strategic influence to solve complex challenges in a fast-paced and rewarding environment while mentoring and empowering the team. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of a rapidly growing technology sector, directly contributing to innovative solutions for real-world challenges in underground mining battery electric and diesel automation.

Responsibilities and Duties

Technical Leadership and Mentorship

  • Lead a team of engineers in designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable and secure systems for level 2 and above automation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Guide iterative implementation and reviews of ROS based software automation features for deployment on our MacLean Operating System platform for vehicle digital controls.
  • Leverage CAN protocols, including CANOpen and J1939, for effective communication with vehicle systems and intelligent processing and interface development.
  • Utilize protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, HTTPS.
  • Architect systems that integrate with cloud computing platforms (Azure, AWS) and other industry partners automation interoperability stacks.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product management, systems engineering, and operations to align technology solutions with business objectives.
  • Act as a technical liaison with stakeholders, providing updates, contributing to technical requirements, and addressing technical concerns.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of system architecture, configurations, and processes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, international standards, and industry best practices.

Deployment and Project Management Tools

  • Utilize development tools like Visual Studio Code and Docker as well as project management tools like Azure DevOps.
  • Design and implement automated testing suites, environment management, and deployment pipelines (Jenkins, Azure).
  • Work closely with the systems engineering group and other design teams to orchestrate

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, leadership abilities, and problem-solving capabilities. They will demonstrate organizational skills, discipline, an aptitude for proactive learning, and a positive attitude. Additionally, they should meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years of engineering development experience in vehicle automation, robotics, mechatronics and software engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with the job responsibilities and duties described above, mining or mobile vehicle specific experience is an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; proficiency in other languages, primarily Spanish and French, is an asset.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field is an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license or similar certification.
