Electrical Designer – Advanced Vehicle Technology – VMS

MacLean Engineering is looking for talented and energetic Electrical Designers to add to the existing skills of our Advanced Vehicle Technology group on the Vehicle Management Systems team. About the Position: The successful candidate(s) will be working as a member of the Vehicle Management Systems team in one of our facilities and will be given the opportunity to gain valuable experience, knowledge and exposure in the design, manufacturing, and support of our products. The level of responsibility and specific assignments will be based on the abilities of the candidate. 

 

This Electrical Designer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and continued support for our programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and other related systems such as electric vehicles (EV’s) and their sub-systems. It offers exposure to a variety of different areas (e.g. 5VDC to 24VDC and 4-20mA control systems, PLC program control systems, HMI design, telemetry etc.) and the ability to integrate many different pieces of technology and products. The successful candidate will work on control architecture and component level details for mobile machines in the mining industry alongside a strong and experienced team of designers and other electrical systems specialists.  

Candidates applying for this role should have experience with: 

 

PLC specific 

  • CODESYS or other similar PLC programming languages – structured text and function block

preferred 

  • PLC hardware – sensor selection and machine instrumentation 
  • Display and HMI development 
  • Interfacing and troubleshooting CAN networks, devices 
  • EV drivetrain components and programming software and diesel engine control systems 

 

Electrical Design 

  • Component design, selection, and integration into systems on mobile equipment  
  • Designing products to comply with ISO standards and regulations 
  • Bills of materials (BOM), fabrication/assembly drawings, 

inspection/testing documents, and engineering change notices (ECN) 

  • Working directly alongside production team members during assembly 
  • System ladder logic and wiring diagrams 

 

Telemetry Development 

  • Unix/Linux server development for telemetry systems 
  • Protocols such as OPC UA, SFTP, HTTPS, and SSH 

 

 

Candidates applying for this role should expect to: 

  • Manage project work as assigned by their Product Manager with attention to schedule, capacity

planning, and other deliverables 

  • Demonstrate leadership in the execution of overall design activities and provide

technical insight to other members of the team to support the goals set by the Product

Manager 

  • Increase the productivity and effectiveness of the overall design team by looking for new and

improved ways to carry out the required work 

  • Communicate with other internal departments such as Manufacturing, Purchasing, Customer

Support, and field service as well as external component vendors 

  • Support the overall quality and business objectives of the company 

 

About You: The successful candidate(s) must be willing to learn, open-minded and flexible, organized and detail oriented, team oriented, disciplined, and must have a positive attitude, along with the following qualifications: 

 

  • Engineering Diploma or Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution 
  • Eligibility for licensing through OACETT or PEO is preferred 
  • Preferred experience in the design and / or manufacturing of heavy/mobile/construction type

equipment 

  • Able to use SolidWorks and AutoCAD with preference for those who have certified training

completed 

  • Computer proficient in MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Project, Sharepoint) 
  • Preference to those who can demonstrate an understanding of manufacturing processes such as

machining, welding, assembly 

  • Able to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing with preference for

those 

who can do so in more than one language 

  • Experience working on mobile mining equipment is an asset
